2nd Gen Runner, Rear Diff Gasket Leaks a day after installation

Hey All. 6months ago my rear diff was leaking, so i installed a new gasket i picked up from Lordco.

Yesterday it started to leak so i swapped it out again with the same paper gasket from Lordco,

I woke up this morning to a puddle of gear oil on my driveway, this is after simply rolling it from the garage to the driveway. I was certain that both surfaces of the axle/diff were clean. The only issue i had while installing the gasket is a tiny bit of gear oil soaked into the paper. Could this have caused a premature leak after 12hrs of sitting? Getting real pissed of with my axle now.

Use of paper gaskets for this service is so 1990. I never use paper gaskets on diff punkins any more.

Permatex Ultra Gray is one of the best materials for this kind of joint.

If the surfaces are properly degreased, there is never a leak, even if there might be a little irregularity, or warping of the flanges.

I think you are using the wrong gasket. It should be a metal crush washer.

Might of been a misunderstanding. Im speaking about the gasket between the rear 3rd and the axle.

Ill do this next, thanks. Makes more sense to use this than a paper gasket, i don't know why i didnt think of it when i have a bottle of the red RTV stuff on my shelf lol.

Like previously stated, and by your own experience, the use of the paper gasket isn't as good as using something like permatex gray. Personally I prefer and used Toyota F.I.P.G. Orange when I did it. It is made to be used with gear oil. The black fipg would work also, but probably not needed. Permatex or Toyota FIPG (more expensive) should work equally well and way better than paper.

Took another look, the spot of gear oil might of just been residue from the axle after spilling a bit, but i'm unsure yet. Ill go the gasket maker route if it turns out it is shot. Thanks for the help
