22RE Major engine maintenance after 300k?
#1
Background: My 1995 extended cab 2WD stick continues to serve me well in spite of my lax approach to maintenance. I was the second owner at 123k. It now has passed 300k. All is basically stock, and engine has never been opened. So the timing chain and guides are original! Oil is 10w30. The clutch was rebuilt recently. Mostly California city and freeway driving. Passed smog with flying colors. A trusted mechanic is available to do the work.
Obvious needs: It's time to replace belts and hoses and flush coolant. The radiator needs to be replaced due to slow leaks from top tank seams.
What should we do on my next visit to my mechanic? Is it unreasonable to shoot for another 100k? I want to keep this small pickup running as it is just the right size for my transportation needs,
Thanks in advance for any advice. This is my first post. Yotatech Forum has helped me solve various minor problems over the years. Respect!

Welcome aboard!
I would add an OEM thermostat to the upcoming coolant flush. Thermostat failure(then subsequent overheating leading to headgasket failure) is one thing that could derail your next 100k. I’ve never been able to get more than 125k out of an original. I’d take a close look at the timing chain and guides; you may be on borrowed time there. And out of curiosity, i’d run a compression test just for reference.
