3vze engine dies after thermostat and drive belts replacement

Hello, newbie here. I just changed the 3 drive belts, thermostat and fan clutch on my 92 toyota pickup with 3vze engine. Prior to changing the parts, I flushed out the old coolant using the water from a hose. I also removed the battery. After the new parts are installed, I filled the coolant, but I stopped when it started to overflow after only about 3/4 gallon. Then I started the car, thinking that it would open up the thermostat when the engine gets hot which would allow me to fill in more coolant. My only research found coolant capacity about 10.5 qt. The engine started fine but after a few minutes, it died. It turns over, but not start. Please help! I would appreciate the help in diagnosing and resolving my issue.
