Smittybilt Tube Bumper: Pickup vs 4Runner

Yes, I've searched various threads but can't find a definitive answer as to whether a rear Smittybilt tube bumper from an '87 4Runner will mount directly to an '87 Pickup. Are they interchangeable? From what I've read in other posts, the bumpers mount to the inside of the frame on 4Runners and the outside on Pickups. Are there obstacles to contend with? I found a bumper for sale from an old 4Runner and I'd like to swap it for the one that's on my truck. Thanks for any insight and advice that can be provided.

Front bumper: I did swap the Smittybilt bumper directly from my 87 4Runner to an 86 Pickup 4x4 after I totaled the 4Runner. Top of tube bumper was scraped up pretty bad from when I slid upside down on the highway .

Rear bumper: On 1st gen 4Runners, the Smittybilt tube bumper had the 2" hitch receiver above the bottom tube & the pickups were below the bottom tube. There must've been a reason why they were designed different by Smittybilt, could be how they mounted to the frame from the support rods coming from the receiver. Here is a pic of my 4Runner and a pic I found on the web for a pickup:

Your question is ambiguous.

"From what I've read in other posts, the bumpers mount to the inside of the frame on 4Runners and the outside on Pickups"

Which "the bumper" the factory or the Smitty?

Regardless all the frame dimensions are in the FSM..

Well I spent about a minute looking.

Outside to outside of the frame rails is 1meter and 1.1 meter on atleast two versions of the chassis..

So yeah seems legit the same Smitty bumper is going to mount outside deof the rails on some and inside the rails on others.

Thanks a lot, Paul 22RE! Looking at the 4Runner bumper I was going to buy it's as you said with the receiver mounted above the bottom tube and almost in line with the top tube. Regardless of whether it will mount directly on my truck, I wouldn't want the receiver that high.

Co_94_PU, sorry to cause you to lose a minute of your time
