Hey guys. Newbie here. I recently picked up a really clean 85 4x4 pickup 22RE and today when I was out cruising it started making a really loud banging noise when letting the clutch out in 1st to get going. Like it sounded like the drive shaft snapped or something. I was convinced when I got out I would see it hanging on the ground. This noise/loud bang only happens when I’m taking off from a stop. Once I get going it doesn’t happen again.
I inspected the drive shaft, it’s all tight and nothing appears messed up.
Anybody ever have this happen or have any ideas? I feel it coming from the rear of the truck. It’s got a solid posi rear end.
Thanks in advance.
motor/tranny mounts? Axle wrap? spare tire hanging loose under the back?
" It’s got a solid posi rear end." never heard of such a thing, a posi is a limited slip, or are you referring to a solid axle, Toyota didn't make an independent rear suspension for the trucks.
Stock shifter setup? When I went to twin sticks shifters they would bang on the tunnel when starting in first gear. I replaced the trans mount with a poly unit, and the problem went away. Probably not your problem if you don't have a twin stick and the noise is for sure coming from the rear.
My fault. It’s got a solid rear axle. The inside tire is chirping when I turn corners.

I don't feel like you are using that term correctly.
Given your last statement what you have is a locked differential, which means you can't turn one wheel with out turning the other wheel.
Jack up one of your rear wheels and try to turn it (your transmission should be in neutral and both from wheels should be chocked), can you turn the wheel assembly. If you can't turn it you have some form of locked differential.
Did the previous owner mention anything about it having a locker in the rear end?
if it has a ratcheting style locker they tend to make a lot of noise and are not something I would recommend for a daily driver, they cause a lot of drivability and noise complaints.
Your description matches what I experienced with a Lockright lunchbox locker in a Chevy full size Blazer I built a long time ago. Once in a while there would be a loud pop/bang when taking off, snap/pop sounds when cornering occasionally, tire squeal/chirp/hop when cornering in parking lots, really funny steering when taking long curves on the highway (pushes straight when you are on the gas and corners harder all of a sudden if you let off the throttle).
Try to get your terminology straight, a solid rear axle means that the whole thing from wheel to wheel is in ONE housing and all moves together going over bumps. I don't know of ANY Toyota trucks with independent rear suspension and we can see the leaf springs and solid axle setup in your picture.
What we can't see is the internals. Your differential (or 3rd member) is the chunk in the middle and could be a spool, limited slip or a locker and they all act differently.
