1987 22r New weber 32/36, what degree to set timing?
I have a 1987 22r, stock minus all the emissions (egr etc.) AND i installed a new weber 32/36. I cannot find a def answer on timing. Aisin carb was set to 0 with vacuum plugged, then goes to 12 deg when vacuum is hooked back up(per fsm)I am talking about the vacuum closest to the valve cover(which the weber does not use). The OEM carb would leak gas into the manifold over night and flood the engine, hence the new weber. The weber only has 1 ported vacuum, and it goes to the dizzy closer to the radiator. I need to know, do i set it to 0 degrees, or 12 degrees as if the vacuum advance was actually connected to the part of the dizzy?

Nobody? Im sure someone is running a similar setup. Just trying to get a good idea on timing. Right now its set a 10btdc at idle. Any reason to try and advance it more? Has slight backfire, sounds like its actually under the hood and not after fire, at 30mph under slight acceleration. No problems when floored. Has only done this about 3 times so very inconsistent and hard to pinpoint(tried to replicate this Several times). Just wondering if timing would affect that. Thanks for any help.

I am new to the Weber so i am not 100% sure its all setup correctly yet. I did the best lean per webers instructions. Fuel/air mix screw is 1 1/2 out from bottom, idle screw is 1 3/4 in from touching. According to their instructions this seems to indicate the jets are correct. Fires right up, bawls both tires and pulls strong to 90 mph(left off after that). So i think all is good. Only had the backfire a few times. I will drive it more and see how it goes, might have been a one(well 3) time deal. 😁. Was just curious about the timing advance. I was used to the Aisin, set at 0 with vacuum unhooked, then goes up to 12 with vacuum connected. It basically kept it at 12 until you pressed the gas, then i assume 0, then the other vacuum advance and mech adv took over. So i wasnt sure where to set it. 0 makes it run rough. Couldnt tell much difference between 5-12 though. Any benefit to running it at 12 btdc vs 5 btdc if it runs good either way?
thanks for the info!

How many miles on the timing chain? That alone can make a big difference. With a new chain I can run 0 degrees with no issues. When you put a light on it does the mark jump around? You plugged the vacuum port closest to the radiator correct? I just played with the timing for fun. Ran it way up then just left it at 4. I'd leave it as close to stock as I could as long as it runs well. If it "bawls the tires and pulls strong to 90" I'd just enjoy the ride.

Yea i beleive all is good now. No, i did not cap the port closest to the radiator. The port plugged on the dizzy is the inner one, closest to the valve cover. The one closet to the radiator advances under acceleration, the plugged port closest to the valve cover only advances at idle. That idle advance is not supported with the weber carb.

No problem. Been less than 30,000 miles on rebuild(including timing chain). I had gotten real good with the aisin carb and all its vacuum switches, it would not stop flooding when turned off, so i had to get rid of it. The weber does not flood overnight so that is finally fixed😁.
