Question 1992 4x4 Pickup Poping Out of First Gear

Hi all, my 1992 5 sp. manual keeps poping out of first gear if I accelerate and let off the gas. I replaced the shifter bushings and it is still happening but much less frequently. Any advice?

Does this truck have a body lift?
Does the shifter clear the body?
Does the shifter move a lot when accelerating and decelerating?

If none of the above then it is time for a rebuild.

No
yes
It did before I replaced the shifter bushings

the tranny is loud in 1-3 and but sounds fine in 4th and 5th. I was hoping a rebuild wasn’t the case but the signs and symptoms are there. Time for another new project!

Cheers! And Thanks for the reply!

Do you rest the weight of your hand on the shifter? Mine will pop out of first if I have the full weight of my hand on the shift lever, but otherwise never. I just had to train myself not to do that and it's been fine for the past 5 years.

may not be getting all the way into gear to begin with. might be worth getting some good clean fluid in it and seeing how it responds.

I have had two trucks do this and both of them i ended up swapping out the transmission.
I'm not sure if you're saying that it's popping out of gear as you're releasing the clutch or as you're driving down the road. Regardless, if you've replaced the shifter seat and you're still having issues, id say its either the syncro's are bad in that gear or you're missing teeth. Regardless, while you have the transmission out, you might as well do a complete rebuild because you're going to have it completely apart anyway.
However, i use a company called C&K Auto parts whenever i have needed replacement transmissions. They're in the process of sending me a transmission right now for $1,400 with a 3 year/100,000 mile warranty. If you're interested. Takes about 8 days to arrive from the time of payment so they can build and ship.

Sorry i couldn't be of more help!
