4runner tailgate 87 DLX window scissors lube
1987 4runner DXL AT.PS,PB,AC, Altimeter on dash 22 RE…roll bar
Tailgate window question> For years I used to be able to power rear window all the way down, drop down tailgate, rest the gate on trash can so gate is about 45 degrees. Then roll window up carefully about half way up to expose the window glass metal track …Putting gate at 45 degree precluded the window from coming up and falling out on the ground. Then spray that track with clean motor oil liberally so as to lube the plastic stationary button that slides within the folding scissors. The truck is 32 years old and metal and plastic is getting tired.
Q: Now the window will NOT come out when tailgate is tipped slanted or even completely down.
Fortunately the window DOES go up and down normally. But the scissors requires lube periodically
There must be some kind of kill switching that denies window from moving when gate is not completely closed upright into the 4runner archway.
The window lock switch on console only prevents window from operating with gate closed. Unlocked console button permits window up and down providing gate is closed. I know it’s designed to prevent somebody from running glass up if the top was off. Don’t want to mess up a working window in tailgate
Its 2 door and too difficult for 70 y.o to crawl back inside and spray the scissors track from the inside of the SUV with the window halfway down exposing the track thru the cavity with the carpet and metal pad protector removed.
Any ideas? Thanks

use a screw driver or something to trick the tail gate locks (on the end) to think they are close like they would if the tail gate was in the up and closed position. Hope that makes sense.
I did this on my 2nd gen to do get the glass out of the way when I installed lights in my tail gate.
Dunno why the pics aren't showing up, click the attachment link and it will take you to the original picture

Had the afternoon to work on the 4Runner so started to tackle the rear tire mount
Some people said to take out the window...decided to chance it

wonder if that works on 1st gen, mine is 1987, 3d year; wouldn't wanna get the locks messed with gate slanted, opened and then not being able to close it. I did try the pop up center toggle near the liftgate handle up, and down, but the console switch did nothing. the glass never moved.
And this procedure did work many times prior for years. Thanks for the advice. But not confident it will work.

There's a switch in the latch on both sides to tell when the tailgate is shut. The window will not operate (if working as originally designed and nobody has hacked up the wiring to "fix" it) unless the latches are shut. A screwdriver is the perfect tool to press the latches until you hear two clicks on each side. This applies to your 1987 as well. There will be no damage to latches due to the angle. Would you worry about damaging the latches if you were operating the tailgate normally but parked on a steep hill? Once your work is complete, roll the window back down into the tailgate and pull the release handle like you normally would to open the tailgate. This will unlatch the latches. Then you can close the tailgate and operate as normal.
