87 4Runner 22RTE with 198,000 miles. Was getting a strong fuel smell from the area around the charcoal canister. It was the original canister and tested bad (per FSM test procedure) so I replaced it with a new OEM canister and that corrected the fuel smell. Now, when the engine sits for more than 2 days it takes about 5-8 seconds of cranking plus having to step on the gas pedal once or twice to get it to run. Canister checks good (per FSM test procedure) and lines are routed correctly. Fuel pump and fuel filter were both replaced a year ago.

Started right up every time with the old canister, so any ideas what to look for? Could the new canister be bad even though it tests good?

 

Double check your vacuum line and anything else you might have touched bumped or looked at while performing the swap.

The purge port is behind the throttle plate when the throttle is closed, you can grab a vacuum cap and plug the throttle body port for it see what if any effect that has. But really I expect its something you bumped.

Worst case you do the fuel pressure tests and see how well the system holds pressure.

Long cranking time can be a symptom of a failing fuel pump.

 

Check the wiring to the cold start injector and the cold start injector thermal time switch. Test the thermal time switch too.

Had a thermal time switch go bad a couple years ago on my 92 pickup 22RE. Cold starts were a PITA. Bought a Beck/Arnley from RockAuto, and it actually was the factory Toyota part in a Beck/Arnley box.

Bumping something is very likely with me. I'll check for that first.
I have not yet checked the Cold Start Injector or the switch. I'll do that next.
