84 Pickup lost all power beyond the under hood fuse box

Hey all,

i swapped a 94 alternator into my 84 pickup and after I was finished I had no power in the cab but I checked the fuse box under the hood and it has power. I also get no power to the battery connection to the alternator or the constant 12v wire to the alternator harness. The truck has no fuseable link between the fuse box and battery. I stumped on this one.

Welcome!

I thought the 1984 Trucks had external regulators for the alternators, and the 1994 alternators had built-in regulators.

How did you wire in the alternator?

Power is making its way to the fuse box. Is there power going through the fuses in the fuse box? You will want to check the fuses with a multimeter or test light.

That’s another odd part about my truck there is no external regulator where one should be. The alternator wires go right into the harness so I took the plug from the 94 alt and wired it in even with it disconnected nothing changes. Another weird thing is a set of six relays where the external reg would be along the fender that have their own harness that can hook to the battery and is tied into the main harness. I’m not sure what they do but they look OEM. The two big 30 and 40 fuses had power when checked with a test light but no power at all in the footwell fuse box.

Figured it out it was a bad connection to the tail light relay.

I was too till I discovered there wasn’t one. I’m adding in a 80 inline fuse between the box and the battery.
