So I've recently put an engine together and into my 4Runner I bought last spring. Now I've just recently started driving it, and it gave me an Engine light. I was running rich so I moved my dial inside of my VAFM two clicks to lean out. No light back on yet, but I was wondering if the wires inside the VAFM looked okay, someone had already had the cover off. I was concerned specifically about the little tabs that are soldiered on that don't seem to connect to anything. The meter seems to move fine.

 

Honestly I would set back adjustment on VAFM, your just masking the real problem.
How many miles on your o2 sensors, prefably the up-stream one?

The AFM is a factory calibrated sensor and adjusting it is not a correct way to make the engine run more lean or rich. All you are doing when adjusting the AFM is giving the computer an incorrect value for air volume which is probably matching with an incorrect value somewhere else.

 

As the post stated before, it was already opened and messed with and running rich before I even got it. I have no idea about the mileage of my 02 sensor, as I have only recently started driving it. It was a $700 4runner with a 3.0 in Idaho. Everything is rusted out on the exhaust because of chemical de-icing agents on the roads. I would be surprised to find out that they even work. I swapped out the ECU and it solved my intermittent start issue. It also has a new starter, ignition, EFI relay, cleaned injectors with all new seals, circuit opening relay, and an EGR delete. I asked if the internals of the VAFM looked kosher, not a diagnosis on the vehicle.
