new to this site. 84 22R blew up and found a 85 22R. will I have any issues with this swap. Anything I should look out for.

'85 (with actual production in late 1984) was the big redesign year for the 22r/re. It got a 3/16" shorter deck height (and shorter timing cover with new water pump design), slightly-dished pistons and a new cylinder head with shallower combustion chambers, pear-shaped exhaust ports and shorter head bolts.

Crankshaft, rods, cams (for carb) and rocker assembly were shared from early - late 22r engines.

So it's possible your engines are both late-style, and exactly the same. But even if your old engine is the early-style, you can still swap the entire long block out no problem, just very few parts would interchange between them. If this is the case, you'd also get a little bump in power due to higher compression.

 

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping it would bolt right in. Bought a new water pump and oil pump. going to delete the smog. Hopefully it will have more power.

 

Yup, motor mounts and bell housing are the same between early - late 22r. The intake will bolt right up. The exhaust will be an issue if your old engine was early-style, but it's not hard to find a used header or manifold.

If your '84 engine was really tired and the '85 gets freshened up, you might notice some extra power, but without lots of mods these are just slow little 4 cylinders.
