Valve stem seals

i need to replace my stem seals in my 1980 with 20r. I’ve never done this and was wondering if I could remove the head and replace the seals on the work bench? I planned on using air to hold the valves from falling and replacing the head gasket at the end just for safe measures and didn’t know if it was possible to do it on the bench since I plan on removing the head anyway

No problem but you will need a spring compressor which you can probably borrow from a store like Oreilly or AutoZone. That is of course how a machine shop would do it if you brought them the head for a valve job.
i would take a little time to clean the valves and lap them while you’re in there.
Find videos on valve lapping on YouTube.

I’ve got the spring compressor and air fitting to hold up the valve but was just curious if it’d be ok to do it on the bench. Thanks for the input

You can do it on the bench.

If you try and do this in the truck, pulling the rocker assembly out of the way, is effectively unbolting the head from the engine. Airing up the cylinders will not work. I never looked into sliding the rockers over on the shaft to do in the truck though. seems like too much trouble.

I just did this same thing, pulled the head from the truck.

Good deal I just received all the parts and will be doing it in a few days. Any pointers for someone doing it for the first time?

leave plugs in head, flip head upside down, fill combustion chambers with acetone or another thin liquid. Make sure the liquid does not leak into the intake or exhaust ports. if it does, check to make sure there is no crack between the valve seats, if no cracks, lap the valves.
