Hey guys, I just replaced my clutch master and slave cylinder and now I have some high pitched sound that coming from below, I'm thinking the transmission. I replaced the master because it was dripping fluid inside the cab. I went ahead and replaced the slave too because it was recommended to do both at the same time. It was straightforward but the slave was a p.i.t.a. because I couldn't get the pin in when mounting it. I eventually got it back on and everything looks good. Any ideas what might be causing the noise? It goes away when the clutch is in.

 

Does it sound like a bearing? Kind of a "whirring" sound?
typically that would be the throughout bearing. If you are not due for a clutch job i would ignore the noise. You can go a long time with a noisy throughout bearing. Could also be the tranny input shaft bearing. Same advice.

 

It's also possible your clutch pedal free play is not set correctly.

 

Thanks for mentioning that. I'm going to take a look at that today. Do I have to unbolt the clutch master cylinder from the firewall to do that?

 

 

No, it should stay in place in order to adjust pedal free play.
I don't think you need to adjust your pedal height, it should have not changed.
It might take a couple of times to get it set properly.

Just wanted to respond with an update. I never really found out what that sound was. I tried to adjust the pedal free play though and it helped me get into 2nd easier, which is nice... A few weeks later my clutch went out on the highway. The shifter would move but the transmission would not engage at all. So I got a new kit, had it out in, and had a professional adjust the free play. It drove like butta' for a bit but now it seems like the pedal could be adjusted again. I'm lost at this point. Not too worried about it though -- I have a new master and slave cylinder plus a whole new clutch so there's not a whole lot left to the system.
