Rebuild or Buy Used Engine
I started another thread about my cam bolt head and pin popping off. My cams are shot, I also need new cam gears as mine are worn beyond use. Today I also discovered I have a blown head gasket on the opposite side of the engine from the broken cam bolt. I have the engine down to the block and the center cylinder on the passenger side had antifreeze in it. The rear head bolt was broken off even with the block, kinda like some one pried the head up from the front and broke the bolt off (Allen headed head bolt).
The cylinders are in great shape, no ring groove at the top of the cylinders at all, you can still see the hone cross thatches in there. The piston are stock but the 4Runner has high mileage. With water in the one cylinder I am afraid that set of rings might be set up. I have priced the parts to rering the engine and all new bearings, with different heads. With all I plan to put back in the engine I am close to $1,200. or so, I can buy a used engine off ebay for around $1,000.00. Which way would you suggest. If I could find a set of heads with cams that wouldn't break the bank I know which way I would go.
I really appreciate your help.
