This weekend ill be dropping the transmission in my 1982 2WD pick up to replace the clutch. well I have the tranny down I'm going to replace the rear main seal and the pilot bearing. what else can/should I do well i have access?? this truck has 250000 miles on it (picked it up for 400$) and I don't believe the engine has ever been rebuilt, so, I plan to replace everything I can get at well this tranny is down because Im not going to pull the engine until it blows. Thanks guys!!

 

The only other thing is the transmission input seal. You can do the transmission output seal in the truck but it might be easier with the trans out.

 

Read up very carefully on the process for correctly replacing the rear main seal. Marlin (of Marlin Crawler) actually recommends that people not do this unless it's actually badly leaking. More often than not, the average home mechanic decides to do it as "preventative maintenance", and ends up creating a leak. I'm not saying necessarily don't do it, just make sure you know what you're doing. It needs to be seated just right, and you need to make sure there's no wear around where the seal seats. Just like on the front main where people often need to use a speedy sleeve. And make sure it seats just right.

Otherwise I can't really think of anything you gain access to. It is a good opportunity to see if your rear half moon gasket under the valve cover is leaking, and a good chance to just clean things up.

 

You might think of replacing the clutch and throw out bearing, with that many miles

 

Yeah hopefully that goes without saying...Replace the pilot and throwout bearing, have the flywheel resurfaced. Look over the master and release cylinder closely.
