88 22R Carb: I might need a new muffler. The cat is fine because I just changed it; the old cat was plugged. Maybe the old muff is also plugged? Since I am going to replace the muff, I was wondering whether it is worth getting an aftermarket replacement, hopefully one that is not too noisy. I don't want to make a lot of noise, but I am desperate for better throttle response.

Given the engine your working with just how much do you expect in throttle response ??

I have been using Walker Exhaust products for years .

I like just being able to bolt everything together .

 

Just get a Walker or Bosal factory type replacement. They are the only thing that will be quiet. Everyone that goes in looking for a quiet performance exhaust has come out disappointed because of noise or drone, myself included. I have a factory replacement Walker exhaust just like Wyoming. Best thing there is besides OEM.

 

If little noise is what you want, don't buy an Aero Turbine. They are long lasting as they are made of stainless. Ive had one on my pickup for 15 yrs and it may outlast me, but it aint quiet.

 

I know, I know... I expect too much from a little engine. Its just that this is my second 22R truck, and the first one, God rest its soul, was very peppy. Even got pulled over once for unsafe acceleration--one of the proudest moments of my motoring life. Fully loaded, that thing could pull into traffic with minimal spacing, burn a little rubber while doing it, fully loaded with tools and equipment.

This second 22R experience has been a bit disappointing. Had I known that acceleration would be this lackluster, I might have opted for a T100, which was my second choice of truck.

So far, in order to get up to speed faster and save the clutch, I have geared down from 3.73 to 4.10. If I cant make significant gains with the new muffler, I may have to gear down again. (In case this isn't making a lot sense to you, know that I have swapped the original rear end for an 8-inch rear out of a single wheel 1-ton.)
