to 4.88 or 5.29?
My truck is a 85 22re with a 5spd, it has 33x10.5s on it now but will be getting replaced before this winter with 35 or 37s. the truck has a lift and can handle 35s. It has 4.10s in it now and I am seeking the advise of people who live or have lived with this. do I go with 4.88 or 5.29. now I live in a valley so to go either way to the next town in at least a 2500 foot elevation climb. I don't hardly do any highway and the truck does spend a lot of time off road. I am leaning to 5.29 because of the greater mechanical advantage but how bad would the RPMs be at 5th gear 65 or 70? I have tried calculators online and cant seem to get them to work. the truck is going to start seeing a lot more rocky trails this year but how bearable would 5.29s be?

I had 5:29's on my last 85 and ran 33's. Way to much gear for freeway with 33's. 35's would have been perfect. Although I did start in 2nd gear driving around town that weirded my passengers out a bit.

Gear ratio, speed and rpm calcs
W56 + rf1a
4.10 w/33s. 60@2100 65@2300 70@2500
4.88 w/35s. 60@2400 65@2600 70@2800
5.29 w/35s. 60@2600 65@2800 70@3000
Something like that.. 37s at 4.88 put you about 150rpm higher than what you have.
Edit..
Mine are 31s @ 4.10, 37s @ 4.88 would give me better torque and slightly lower rpms... But I'd also need the transmission and transfer

I'm currently with 4.88s and 35s (KM2 so not a true 35") not bad and very doable. Saw a post that my set up is like -3% from stock. I built in stages and running 33s for years.
So 35s are fine on 4.88s but since you are also thinking possible 37s I'd go 5.29.

so it looks like I am going with 5.29s. Thanks for the chart I have been having hell with trying to get that info. And thanks for all the input. I would love to hear from more people.

I think your making the right decision with 5:29's if you plan on 35-37's as a final tie size. You can run 33's with them for a while but the freeway cruising speed will be limited. Other than that your good.
