Question Can't figure out rear window after tinkering

First, as a new member, I like what I see and I like the positive attitude here.

Second, as a new 4runner owner, I appreciate time guys spend helping folks like me.

Third, I'm a jeep guy who got a 4runner for a daily driver, don't hold it against me, I'm learning. My first project was an engine rebuild. I like these foreign trucks (I'm finally using all those metric wrenches and sockets I have)

Fourth, my problem. I've done tons of troubleshooting to get my rear window to work. The PO took everything out of the tailgate :pat: so I don't really know what it was doing the last time it worked. ANYWAY, I got a new motor, gears, etc. I can make the motor go up and down but via a strange method. I took my cheap circuit tester (the kind you ground and then touch to something and it lights up when you hit power) and found out that there is a lead on the relay (the one behind the driver's seat) that makes the window go up and one that makes it go down when I touch it. I did the same thing on the switch in the console, same result.

QUESTION: Do I have a ground problem, a switch problem, a relay problem, or something else I haven't thought about.

Thanks for any input, Will

The window motor must reverse polairty to go up and down. In a "non use" mode, both wires are isolated. The switch is a STDP switch that has 2 ground outputs (one for up, one for down) The relay circiut positive side is always on (however the ground feed for the dash switch is cut with the key off, you can rewire that feed so it does not have to be) You can make a new relay circiut with some wire, and 4 30amp Bosch relays.. 2 Relays will provide a "up" and the other 2 will be the "down" In a nut shell, on the #87 output of the relay, each set will give a + and a - output at the same time when fed a ground from the switch. This is easy to do and a lot cheaper than the $800 relay box. Roger Brown's is for a 1st Gen and the relay boxes are not the same. Some info may work, but this solution has been on mind for 2 or 3 years now.. If you want more detailed info, drop me an e-mail to: Lee@taftnet.com

Neglected to mention, 88 model, well used, 4runner

Mike, I've been all over that page. Very helpful. That got me this far but can't seem to answer my question still-- maybe because I'm electronically slow.

FF-EMT, I shot you an email, thanks.
