Aloha people. ..so i just got done rebuilding my 84 22r new position new rings and connecting bearings. .the crank and main bearing looked in really good condition but after bolting everything up she started up and runs really nice. Its like noght and day from hiw she ran before the overhaul. .but im still hearing a slight knocking or tapping noise from the bottom half. .does anyone know what this might mean? ..any advice would be awesome

I've seen plenty bad cranks that looked 'really good' but were way out of spec.

Did you mike the rod and main journals, or plasti-gauge the new bearings for clearances??

How 'bout the con rod small end bushings? Any play there?

Piston slap?? what were the piston to cylinder measurements???

Without precision measurements, engine work is guesswork.

Your knock might emanate from any of these areas, or come from somewhere else entirely.

 

i would use an engine stethascope to verify where the knocking is coming from.

worst case, cut off a broom handle and use that.
