83 carb/aircleaner
Hi all
I have an '83 pickup - It had sat for 4 years before I decided to save it - held together with bits of fencing wire - imperial bolts forced into metric threads, horrible elec wiring , loose wires and bare wires...kind of a mess. I'm slowly pulling it into some sort of shape.
I was told that it has a replacement motor, but it is 22R with carb. I don't know how to tell the stock carb from the weber but I guess its stock.
The airfilter (original? 12' x 2") has two broken clips and the lid doesn't fit the base - it seems to be 1/2" too small dia. So I'm looking to replace it. This is a city and freeway vehicle, it won't see offroad service. What is a good - and cheap - replacement? Is a cheap sporty 9" chrome unit ok, or should I find an original?
I'm in LA, east of downtown, any recommendations for good wrecking yards?
thanks all!

Identifying the carb is pretty straightforward - simply look at it without the air cleaner and it should have identifying marks cast into the metal either on the side and/or on the mounting flange.
Your air cleaner can easily be replaced with either carb, just buy a kit and it comes with the plate adapter to mount it. I see no sense in going toward a stock unit unless you're using the snorkel/funnel.
Down in LA I'd imagine all the Toyota pickups get stripped within hours of showing up at a wrecking yard. Try them all, good luck.
One of the best resources for Toyota engines is LCE, which is down by you.

many of the lines on the engine block can be cleaned up and removed. Look up de-smogging guides, they explain what each line does and what can be rerouted or blocked off. You will still need to have your PCV valve hooked up to the intake though but the front vent can be swapped to a pod filter.
I'm not sure what valve in the intake you're referring to - any pics or know what it goes to?

Hi, and thanks
>many of the lines on the engine block can be cleaned up and removed
I'm in California, I do not want to make in impossible to smog - in fact I'd like it to pass smog
I'd liek to know what I can remove/simplify and not
1. compromise performance
2. remain legal
I found a useful vac line diagram over at Pirate, but its for 86-88 22R, mine is 83 (afaik), so I guess this diag is pretty close?
>I'm not sure what valve in the intake you're referring to
the valve inside the aircleaner is the thermo valve for the HAI daiphragm(afaik) - see pic. The HAI diaphragm is over a pipe on the air intake scoop connecting to exhaust manifold (afaik) see pic.
thanks!
