1992 toyota pickup 4x4 starts and will run fine until you put it in any gear except 1st It will idle all day in Park and Neu. and will drive in 1st as soon as you shift into 2-D-or R it DIES you can put back in Park and start it back up . I am leaning toward a shorts wire to shift sol. of shorted shift sol. HHHHEEEELLLPPPP!!!

Does it die instantly or is there some stumbling before it dies?

It sounds like your lockup solenoid may be actuating prematurely, but I am not sure why it would be doing it only when it shifts out of 1st.

To test it, disconnect the wiring harness to the transmission and manually shift the truck using the shifter. Either way, this manual shift test will let you know if it is a solenoid problem or not.

you can actually put truck into Drive and it will go approx. a 100-150ft then die and Rev is about the same . If you manual shift into 1st runs good as soon as you go to 2nd it dies. it is like you turn key off not bogging down

Did you ever get this problem solved. I have a 92 pickup with did just that. I had it in 1st gear, drove it at about 15 mph for about 2 miles and no issues. Put in drive and it died within seconds of taken off. To kick me when I'm down, now I can't it to start. The fuel pump fouls out the plugs. When I unplug the fuel pump relay, it'll turnover, but won't stay running. As soon as I plug the relay back in, it dies almost immediately. I was even able to get it running for a few seconds by quickly plugging and unplugging the relay, but I can't drive like that. Any ideas? Thanks
