Pictures w/ ?s about hub/ cv axle/ hub spring?

Video at bottom. When I shake the hub it sounds loose. Is that normal?
Next picture is my cv axle. Is it suppose to easily go in and out? I'm sure it is. Just need verification.
My other ? Is: my spring is broke on my manual locking hub. Can I put it together and drive it till I get z new spring?

There should be a snap ring in the groove right at the inboard edge of the splines on the CV axle that keeps it from sliding into the spindle. Looks like that's missing. The gold bolt in the end of the CV axle also provides a similar function once the locking hub is mounted.

As far as driving the unit, as long as the hub reliably stays disengaged and you leave it in 2wd, you can drive it just fine, since the CV axle and hub parts won't be turning. The danger with the broken spring in the hub is that the locking collar could slide back and forth, potentially trying to engage the hub while you are moving. That will cause grinding on the mating splines, not a good thing.

Do a google search for rebuilding Toyota manual hubs. There are some good write-ups with lots of pictures on the internet. It's not hard if you take your time.
