Should I replace other parts while doing wheel bearings?

Should I replace other parts while doing wheel bearings?

I'm going to be doing my wheel bearings and didn't know if there are some other parts that are easy to get to while doing this job. Things like ball joints or I even heard about steering knuckle bushings. Any advice is appreciated.

If your rotors are questionable do them now. They are the only thing that would really be easier at this point.

What do you mean knuckle bushings? Do you mean spindle bushings? I wouldn't worry about them unless you have ADD and are experiencing noticeable play in the half shaft. If you have manual hubs then the spindle bushings rarely see use and are not likely worn. To access them you need to remove the half shaft which isn't fun, then they are a pain to actually bang out of the spindle. All the more reason to not replace them if not necessary.

Balljoints are super easy. You only need to remove the wheel to gain access to them so unless they need replacement don't worry.

I'm assuming you're replacing the wheel seals at the same time. If not I suggest you do. The wheel bearings should last easily over 200,000 miles if kept greased and sealed. The real killer is when water gets in and ruins the grease. Manual hubs have two gaskets and an O-ring which can allow water in if bad. Might be time to overhaul those to save your new bearings.

Thanks for the great reply. It looks like I'm gonna have order online cause my local autozone only carries the bearings and not the gaskets. At least that's what the online store says.
I know my rotors aren't that great but I'm hoping to squeeze some more time from them and put money where it needs it most this month. Again thanks for the advice.

Maybe it was spindle bushes I was thinking. Honestly I read something about it on the forum somewhere.

Alright, I checked out Marlin crawler and they have a sweet bearing kit. My question is: Could I just reuse the gaskets on there and just install new bearings? Can I reuse that lock washer? Just trying to save some cash since I have put quit a bit into this thing.
Also, how do I get off the 12mm nut off without it spinning the cv? I don't have an impact gun.

Marlin Crawler sells Koyo bearings. Koyo is the OEM bearing supplier so they are good parts. I've reused the gaskets many times without issue but eventually they do stop sealing and then you greatly decrease the bearing life. Use a real thin skiff of RTV on the gaskets to hopefully extend their life. The wheel seal on the inside of the wheel hub will be damaged by removal. Removal is necessary to replace the inner (bigger) wheel bearing so make sure you source a new one before starting. There's no way around this.

I've reused the lock washer too. Hammer it flat and hopefully the tabs don't break off. If you can, try to bend down tabs that haven't been bent before. If you bend the same one over multiple times it loses effectiveness. They are cheap though. Around $5 for the pair I think.

I've reused all the parts you're asking about before without issue, but eventually they stop resealing and you don't know until you pull the hub off and there is moisture and rust on everything.

Lock the opposite hub and put it in 4hi. Locks the shaft for you.

I ordered my bearing kits from marlin crawler and the o ring for the hub. I figured might as well do it kinda right. Is this gonna cover the two gaskets and o ring your talking about.
