87 4runner woes...

Well as much as I love this thing its giving me fits again. The transmission has completely lost 4th gear. I can shift it into 4th and it will pop right out as soon as I let go of the clutch. This leads me to believe that its time to get the manual transmission rebuilt. Also before going through with this im trying to figure out what my other issue may be. When the clutch pedal is pushed in the truck sounds and runs perfect, but when you let off of the clutch like letting the truck run in neutral the truck makes a tapping noise. This sounds like it may be the throwout bearing to me, but every time I have had a throwout bearing go bad it has been a whining noise and not a tap or click. Any ideas?

Time for a tranny rebuild perhaps a new clutch since you have it all out.

The longer you wait the worse it gets!!!

When your foot is off the clutch pedal both the throwout bearing and pilot bearing are not spinning. Throwout bearing spins any time you press the clutch pedal. The pilot bearing only spins with the crankshaft and transmission input shaft spin different speeds.

i haven't been driving it, been driving the 93 pickup with the dogbox in the back because of hunting season, but that's over so its time to get the 4runner back operable.
