Today I noticed little specs of black/brown sut coming out of my tailpipe. My truck seems to be running fine, I have 148,000 miles on it with the stock exhaust on it. When is it time for a new exhaust system and what are some signs and symptoms? Also how do you quiet the lifter pinging, I have read and heard that 4cyl Toys are notorios for having a certain pinging to them. I have really started noticing mine.

 

Does your truck use oil between oil changes?

You mentioned your exhaust system. Do you think that your muffler needs to be replaced? I have gone through a few mufflers on my car. The muffler baffles eventually rot out and some stuff gets spit out the tailpipe when that happens.
