tailgate fade

the uv's at a mile in altitude have done their damage. my tailgate is faded, the yota letters are chipping. any thoughts on how to safely remove the rest of the letters? how about the best rubbing compound to use to bring back the color? i've got the deep red 94 4x4 p/u.
many thanks

Check out the Tech section where Bob's got a write up on how to remove the lettering and stuff for a black pearl treatment

Or you can check out his website where he's got a LOT of writeups that may be applicable to your truck http://www.4runners.org

Here's the lettering link:

i'm not sure if heat will remove the flat letters as it does the plastic emblems that he describes on his site. seems the plastic would slowly absorb the heat and soften the adhesive. but, if nobody posts a better idea, i'll give it a whirl. thanks.
anbody have any suggestions for best removal of oxidation on a 94?
