any difference between the 1987 22R and the 1990 22R?
I have a one owner 1987 Toyota truck with the 22R manual
any difference between the 1987 22R and the 1990 22R?
I'm asking because I have found a used replacement with 65,000 original miles for my 87 22R. It is a 1990 22R.
I think there shouldn't be any difference, but all my Toyota experiences have been with the 3vze.
I also thought about putting in a different engine that would bolt up to the manual tranny and drop in with minimal modifications, but have had no luck yet in finding that info at this point.
I will go with that 1990 22R if it will be a straight up drop and bolt in?

They are the same blocks and will work for you. 85-94 blocks are all the same. Even if it was fuel injected it would work for you. You would only need to swap out the intakes and add the cam lobe gear on the cam. As long as your truck is complete 2k is plenty enough for your build. While it is out, I would be tempted to swap out the timing chain. So much easier then when it is in the truck.

I'm still not sure what I'm going to do...honestly I would like to go with an engine that has more HP and torque, however after searching the web, it's pretty costly to change from the 22r carbureted simple engine, to a ECU newer engine, for the money I have to invest...

I have converted a truck from a 22r to a 22re and have a step by step thread on converting it to a 22re. I am actually gearing up to convert mine to a 22r. If you are going to convert to an EFI, I would look at some other motor then the 22re. It seems to me the 22re with its age is getting to be finicky. My personal opinion is the wiring and sensors is starting to take it toll on them. When the 22re is working great it is a great motor but when it acting they are a handful.
If you are after more power from the 22r, a friend of mine says it is in the distributor. He used to buy the springs from an online site but is unable to find them anymore. I see LCE sells a performance distributor and eventually I want to call them and see if they sell just the parts to improve a distributor. It might be something to look into.

so, your switching back the the 22R?
if I wanted to go with another EFI engine, what would IYO would be the easiest, low cost, minimal modification, quick drop in and bolt up engine for this truck.
If I have to go back with the 22R, which I'm not against doing, wonder if anyone trustworthy on the forum would have a good used low mile engine that I could work out a deal on including shipping...

gm 2.8, 3.8, 4.3 up to 93, or earlier, based on vehicle. if you are up for the electronics, a cavilier/cobalt 2.4/etc makes a good standalone powerplant, easily boosted..... but if you are gonna do a conversion, either early fi, or carbeurated chevy v6 is the easiest, and quite rewarding... not to mention the aftermarket support. for instance, if your wifes cousin has an 84 grand prix 3.8 you couod get for next to nothing, all you need is one of the billions of cheap gm trannies out there for a good easy runner.

I have decided to go back with the 22r engin. I'm having one shipped that has 69,000 on the clock and a carfax verification of milage. It had a salvage title.
The used engine comes with a 90 day warranty and price was great with delivery to my door. I also went to LC Engineering and purchased a weber carburetor and install kit and emissions block off plates, new Water pump, t-Stat and will have the radiator tanked. I will also inspect the timing chain, guides and teeth on gears before install
So as soon as I get the used engine. I will start the process...
For now I'm gonna clean up the Red yoga and get her ready for the swap

Ok, I thought I would update this thread and get some advice.
I received the 22r engine that I ordered, this morning...good! however they sent me a 22r that had an automatic mated to it.... I have a manual.
My question is: can I switch my old flywheel to the engine I just took delivery? ( I think I can) and Will the crank shaft end, accept the pilot bearing?
any info would be appreciated! and thanks!!

If I was going to do a motor swap, the Chevy 4.3 is a great motor, I like the small block Ford motors which are my favorite motor but if I was doing a motor swap I would do the diesel swap with the OM617 seems to be the most popular or the VW TDI diesel. Doing the swap is out of the budget for me at this time so it wont happen for some time.
The motor that had the automatic will work, just need to add the flywheel and install the correct Pilot Bearing. The crankshaft is correct, just don't know if it has the correct Pilot Bearing installed which is easy to do.

I know that my sachs clutch kit came with a pilot bearing, however the crank for the donor engine, has no pilot bearing, however I believe the piolt bearing with my kit, should fit it they are the same ID..I'll use my micrometer measure and double check

btw I will have lots of used parts for sale, once I do the swap. I have two 22r engines at the moment...the one I ordered and received today and will be installing and the original 22r that came in the truck...

got another question: do I have to jump a wiring harness connector on the just received 22r that had the auto tranny, so the ECM will think the it's in park?
I don't think I have a ECM in this year truck, do I?

There is two wires that you connect to make the computer think it is in neutral. I have tried to find a picture or which two to jump but have yet to see it.
California models do have a computer for the O2 sensor. The computer would be on the passenger kick panel. If yours is not a Cali Emiss model, it wont have a computer at all. If your hood still has the sticker on the bottom side, just above the battery, it will say Calil Emiss, Fed Emiss, or maybe Canadian Emiss. I have not seen a Canadian Emiss truck.

But you are correct as far as not having a computer to run your truck. Being a 22r and not a 22re, I would think you should just be able to connect your manual transmission to and it should run fine.

I know when I order parts from the part store they have it listed as a 2.4 and do not refer to it as the 22re. Toyota likes to use half of the alphabet to describe their motors. the 2.7 motor is like 1uzge or something like that 3.0, 3.4 and a few others have some weird designations as well.

I have a question: what length, diameter, grade is the top transmission bolts?
mine are missing. I got the truck with the engine in the bed and parts in a box and not all the bolts..so i need to buy the two top transmission bolts that are missing

Quick google search says 10mm x 1.25 for the top bolts... not sure on the length.

I'm running a 22RE converted to 22R, from a 1994 auto pickup 2wd, in my 1987 4x4 manual. I tore it down to the short block and lapped the valves/ replaced the head gasket, timing set, etc, but all that was really required was installing the carbed intake and exhaust, eccentric to drive the manual fuel pump, and pilot bearing/ clutch. Also, of the few sensors that exist (water temp, oil pressure, etc), I did use the 1987 22R ones, although I can't say for sure they were different from the 1987 ones.

I work on a lot of mechanical stuff, including diesel engines, but...this engine has a lot of crap on it!, but once I can get the used engine started and running for a while, and see if she was worth the money I paid for her...I'll do the Desmog on her. I already have the Weber 32/36 carb kit with regulator and fpg, block off plates ect...
