Trying to figure out what to do, I just got a junk spare tire winch installed on my 94 4wd...went to get the tire up under there and the hanger is too small! must've been from a 2wd and now I'm trying to figure out how to make it work.

my best idea so far: get a piece of rebar or pipe cut to the size that would hold the tire up, hose clamp it to the hanger and hope for the best? any other ideas? anybody ever switch out the hangers on these things? the winch is from AL and basically rust-free and I'd like to keep it.

 

idea I'm trying this morning: got a junk rim from a 2wd...gonna see if I can get that under the spare and hoist the two up together with the winch. I think both will still be higher than the differential. if that doesn't work the spare is going on the roof!

 

I have never had one that ever worked .

Last thing if I ever need to change a tire is crawl under the truck to wrestle a tire in the mud or other slop.

Are you missing some parts I can`t think they would have two different styles one for the 5 lug wheels and one for the 6 lug wheels

 

yeah it fits great on the smaller rim! they definitely had two different hangers, the hole is way larger on the 4wd rims.

mine was pretty convenient when it worked. seems like other people have had good luck lowering it regularly and spraying it down with wd-40. the concensus in another thread was that tying it to the roof was a bad idea. I'm a little worried about the excess weight from the extra rim under the spare, but we'll see.

 

well, I did it. obviously no one cares too much (ha). cut the 2wd tire off the rim, hooked it to the hanger under the spare, and lifted them both up. it looks ridiculous, but the spare is out of my bed. I put a ratchet strap on there later for extra security since I added so much weight to the carrier cable.

 

I always thought the 2 and 4 wheel drive spare tire carriers were the same. Never looked in to the differences.

 

just order the hangar online.... that just looks bad, and will get you high centered off-rouad. i think it should be the same cable that fits the 2 different size hubs....... or you could aways just get a piece of 1/4" strap welded onto it at a fab shop, like 6" long by 2" wide? might be like a $20 solution.
