Hello everyone! My name is Ian and I recently bought my first Toyota so I wanted to start a thread to keep track of it and show my build. The truck is a 1988 Toyota pickup 4x4, 22re with a 5 speed trans. The truck also has a 3" body lift with 33x12.50s. I bought the truck with a rod knock and the project was on!!
I pulled the old motor out and replaced it with one I found that had only 100k miles!! Before putting the new motor in, I replaced the timing set, timing cover, oil pump, water pump, oil pan, oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket, intake and exhaust manifold gaskets, clutch, flywheel w/ arp bolts, battery, fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator.
After getting the truck running again, it had a rough start and drove very sluggish. So with the advice of a few members and some research, I located all the grounds to ensure they had a good connection. Come to find out, 3 of the 4 weren't even connected, so I cleaned those up and put them where they belong. I also replaced the ignition coil, distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs and wires. Now the truck fires up every time with no hesitation at all!! However, it is still very sluggish to drive. Messing with the ecu and checking codes, I realized that my ecu is out of a 85 Toyota celica!! I found an used ecu on ebay and made the purchase! The ecu should be here by the end of the week so check back for updates!!!
On to the pictures! Before the "your engine bay looks terrible" comments, that is how I got it. haha. The previous owner really did a number on this truck. Once it is running and driving right, ill be cleaning up the bay!!
These trucks get all kinds of hack jobs done on them. Nothing that cant be fixed, just takes some time to get them worked out. Looks like you have a solid truck. Welcome to Yotatech.
Well done dude, looks like your starting to get the hang of a clean engine bay, I hope everything turns out for the best and will be keeping an eye on the build. Good luck again.
