Price for a 76 FJ40

Hey Guys,
I usually hangout on the 4Runner forum but since Im in the market for an FJ40, I thought to get some advise from you all.

Im going to look at a 76 FJ40 Hardtop. straight 6 4.2L 4speed.
The truck is all original with 148,000 original miles. Machanically sound. Typical surface rust with some rust in the bed area. Heating system has been rebuilt and core recored.

Im not sure what the going price is. Is there a site or books that would give me more info as to what I should be looking for.
The seller is asking $4300 OBO.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

The FJ-40 is a very popular off road vehicle that usually demands more money than, say a newer model LC (like the FJ-60 or FJ-62). I've been shopping around for one myself, and there's no one sight to find a standard price such as Kelly's Blue Book or Edmunds.com.

I've seen some for around $1,000 but they didn't run. Cool Cruisers of Texas (www.coolcruisers.com) restores and re-sells them for upwards of $35,000! Judging by what you've said, it seems to be a pretty fair price; however, not seeing or driving the vechicle myself, it's hard to know for sure. Check out the URL below to get some good information on the FJ-40.

JT Outfitters

Good luck and whatever you decide on getting, definitely post some pictures!

Thanks Matt,
Yea I checked out that site as well as TLC4x4 . They both have some incredible FJ's.

I haven't seen JT Outfitters before. Good references. Thanks

I know it will be hard to determine the value. The guy selling it works for the same company I do so I hope we both can skip the BS that usually comes when buying a used vehicle.
We are going to meet up this Friday I hope.

Thanks

Mike

It sounds like it's a pretty fair deal, plus you don't have to go any long distances to look at it or pick it up. I've kicked myself plenty of times because I could have got one a few years back that had been restored inside and out for $11,000. Because I had just started looking, I thought that was a lot of money. After doing a lot of research, I realized that was a pretty good deal--plus the vechicle was about 10 miles from where I live.

Now, about the only things I can find locally are either really old ones (e.g. 1972), or they don't run at all--and the sellers are asking like $7,000 for them!

I have also looked at TLC. Their prices for restorations are now at something like $40,000! I ran across this site as well: www.rockymountaincruisers.com.

They have a pretty neat feature that you can look at cruisers for sale state by state.
