Ok so my 89 Toyota pickup has been overheating. It is blowing white smoke out the exhaust. However, the oil isn't milky, though, which is of course, sign number one of head issues. We put a brand new thermostat in it, but it didn't fix the problem. It overheats while running, so that tells me that it isn't anything to do with the fan. The fluid levels are all good. I don't want to try anything with the head if that's not the problem, as I have never done a head gasket before. Most other things that aren't transmission related, I've done many times. If anyone has any tips, I would appreciate them greatly! I love my Toy and want to get her running, not have her turn into a pile of rust in my back yard.

Are you losing coolant? A bad head gasket doesn't have to make the oil milky, just depends where the gasket failed

 

Take the radiator cap off and start it. Does it push coolant out of the radiator?

 

Hey everyone, thanks for your input. It is indeed the head gasket, the oil has become milky and because my wonderful husband wouldn't stop firing it up, it now has a locked up motor. Probably better that way, I've had problems with the engine since I bought it, so now I have an excuse to spend the money on one that will actually run.

 

Motor may just be full of water now and that's causing it not to turn over. Pull the plugs and try spinning it over to get the water out then take it apart to repair.

 

thats what a compression tester is for, to make sure of the head gasket and the valves, you can get one from harbor freight for about 22 dollars
