1983 HiLux RN38/Truck 4WD Drain Plug Bolt Size
Hey all,
I'm wondering about the size of my drain plug bolt. It is currently a 19 mm bolt. I always thought that the standard size for these was 17 mm. Somehow, some way I have ended up with a 19 instead of a 17. Perhaps someone happened to get a tad bit aggressive with their tightening and/or loosening practices, and stripped or cross-threaded it and decided to re-drill and re-tap the hole to the new size.
My problem is not one of tooling (obviously 19 mm wrenches are pretty easy to come by and I have access to one as I am a machinist and work in a machine shop - non-automotive, just a production job shop). The issue is that the Toyota drain plug gaskets do not fit my current bolt size.
Anybody else notice anything like this on your pickups?
Also, please try not to tell me to search the forums - already tried that and couldn't come up with anything useful - just tell me if you can...
Thanks,
Cosmo

I used a piece of gasket material on my old 83' Just cut a squar then poked a hole in the center threaded my plug into it. I know its not stock but should fix the issue. That being said a simple trip to a auto parts store with the plug will probably get you a drain plug gasket of the correct size.

If you can get to a NAPA or CARQUEST they have plugs if you need them. They also have the plastic reusable gasket for two bucks. Just take your plug with you and they can match it up. Or, buy a new plug for 3-5 bucks and get a plastic gasket with it.
I have also made my own gaskets for the drain plug but they always wear out too fast for my liking. The plastic gasket is almost infinitely reusable and is super cheap.
