1987 SR5 4x4 Xtra Cab Build - "DICKIE"

Placeholder - Ok so I've just joined but long story kind of short I just picked up an '87 SR5 4x4 Xcab 22re 5 speed from the original owner. Driven up until 2010 when he purchased something new and intended to fix the '87. Even has the original window sticker which is neat especially the disclaimer that says "your estimated fuel cost is $648 per year @ .95/gallon

Being in the northeast, it is extremely rare to find these, nevermind one with a bed that's not rusted in two or completely missing. There is some rust on the seams, but overall not bad. Not my 1st choice color, "Garnet Red Metallic" with gold stripes (and red interior!), but I'm embracing this as nice period color. Has sport bucket seats.

Right now, the truck needs a fuel pump in order to run properly. Aside from that, there are odds and ends that need to be replaced - bumper end cap, one fender that's in poor shape, manual windows hard to roll down, vented window latch, sunroof seal, etc...

This is not going to be a daily, but rather a fishing, dump run, home depot kind of rig. Among a few other things, I'm going to do the 2" Toytec with some 32's and some bronze wheels....plan to get started in the next two weeks, will update regularly!

So no comments which is ok since I haven't really done anything except acquire my '87. However today I installed a new battery and a set of new wiper blades.

As a seasoned detailer, I just had to spot check a few areas to see how they'd come out if I washed and went to town with the Porter Cable and some cutting polish...I'm encouraged!! I didn't realize how much metallic was in Garnet Red.

I've got an OEM Garnet Red fender with stripes going on this week in addition to an OEM tailgate with stripes. Keep in mind this is the north east to find one in this vintage in this shape is pretty remarkable:

Nice truck, I'd love to find one in that good of shape! I need to get some cutting polish and buff out my 4runner before winter hits!

Thanks I had to look past the Garnet Red (which in all honesty), is not terrible in person to get one in fairly good nick.

Question - in the morning, there is condensation on the inside windshield but not on the other windows...obviously moisture is getting in...are there any culprits other than the sunroof, or a vent window with a broken latch that's ever so slightly ajar? Would the cab vents behind the doors be possible?? Thanks!

I don't have an answer for your condensation question but that is a sharp truck. Nice find.

How does the seal around the windsheild look? Is it dry rotted and cracked? I'm not sure on the cab vents...but to me either the sunroof or windsheild seems like would be the culprit.

**EDIT** I see your truck has the chrome trim around the windsheild, that trim has a tendency to allow dirt and debris to get trapped behind it that can trap in moisture and could lead to rust which could be allowing the moisture to seep in. A lot of guys eliminate the chrome trim and replace the windshield seal.
RAD4RUNNER did a writeup on this and Terry87 has done it on his rigs as well. Hope you get t it figured out!

Is there any easy way to prize off the chrome trim? Can I take it off, inspect the seal underneath and replace if necessary, then put the chrome trim back on? There has to be a rubber seal underneath I assume.

I do kind of like it as chrome is a bit more period correct. Obviously I first want to isolate where the condensation source is. But I am willing to go the Terry87 route with what I assume would be a thick piece of black moulding more common in today's cars...thanks rustED!!

Your welcome! I edited my last post with a link to Rad4runners's writeup. I personally haven't (yet) removed the chrome trim, so I can't help you there, maybe Terry87 has some tips on how to remove the trim without destroying it. On my 4runner that's the only chrome on the vehicle, and it's not in great shape, so I'm not to worried about messing it up when removing it, but I understand you wanting to keep yours more period correct since your truck looks all in original condition. -Ed

That is a very interesting thread, I have to figure out if I can and want to tackle that, or if an auto glass company can just come out and whilst they are there, I can root around to see what the windshield surround looks like.

The sunroof does leak a bit, so I am really thinking its windshield, sunroof or vent window (latch is broken). I cannot take a look at my windshield surround now as the truck is being fitted with a fuel filter to get it running right first...hopefully I can have it home end of this week.

Well Dickie is no more. I decided that it was too much work to try and put him back together so I need to sell...if anyone happens to be interested, make me an offer I can't refuse. The frame is rusty but not rotten, it needs a fuel pump so a flatbed or tow would be best. Needs other things like bumper end caps, sunroof appears to be not sealed completely and some other odds and ends. Comes with a new nos fender, tailgate, complete exhaust system. Could be restored or a very nice parts truck I believe.

I am located in CT by the way!

Bummer, I was looking forward to seeing the build! Wish I lived closer and had some ca$h, looks like a pretty solid truck to start out with!

It has potential, I just cannot justify perhaps getting in over my head. I am not a whiz like some of the amazing people on this board who work complete magic with these trucks.
