Power Steering Fluid Capacity???
I just got my 87 4Runnah w/22RE back on the road after sitting for 14 years and I'm working through all the maintenance issues that are popping up.
The latest one is the power steering pump. It is making a slight whine that increases with RPM. Its minor at this point but I want to try be a little proactive. Who knows what the PO put in there and its probably the factory fluid. The color doesn't look bad but its time for some new stuff.
I plan to flush the existing PS fluid with a high quality synthetic ATF like Mobil 1. I know how to do it....I'm just wondering how many quarts to buy.
Anyone know how much fluid is in the PS system? Thanks!

If you are ok with additives and tend to be Captain Overkill like me...here is a good way to do a flush.
- Buy a LubeGard 2-step Power steering Flush + Protectant kit.
- Remove a bit of PS fluid and add the flush bottle. Let it run for 20 minutes or whatever the directions say.
- Drain the PS reservoir by either sucking the fluid out or opening the drain plug if so equipped.
- Disconnect the return line from the reservoir. It will be the one that isn't threaded.
- Plug the open line on the reservoir and run the return line into a container that can hold a couple quarts.
- Get some cheap Dexron I/II/III/IV ATF and have someone start up the car while you continuously add fluid. When new fluid starts running out of the return line have the other person turn the engine off.
- Button everything back up.
- Drive around for a hundred miles or so.
- The repeat #3-7 above with the LubeGard PS Additive and some Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF.

its like 1.5 quarts. I buy two to flush mine out when changing the fluid.
USE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISISON FLUID DEX/MERC 3. NOT POWERSTEERING FLUID.
learn from my mistake. power steering fluid eats all of the seals and you'll need to rebuild it.
