I know this sounds really weird but I've been contemplating on make-shifting a piece of sheet metal to cover the top, bottom and back side of the alternator.

I have an 87 pickup and I'm on my 3rd alternator in a year. Between water, mud, power steering fluid, oil, and whatever else has gotten into it I have no luck with alternators. So I've been thinking about getting sheet metal and connecting it onto the alternator from the drive belt back to cover it from the elements.

What's your thoughts on it?

 

Sounds like a good idea. How would you attach it to the alternator?

Could stay out of the water and fix the power steering and oil leaks?

 

Doesn't an alternator produce heat? Hence it's not a sealed piece to start with.

Yes a very good idea to keep all the heat enclosed are you planning to use liquid to keep it cool .

That is why Alternator case are Aluminum to act as a heat sink

 

I was thinking more like a cylinder cover that is open on the front end (where the pulley is) and the back end (where the wires connect). It would be a cylinder that cones down towards the cab so anything that drips onto it will run down.

I'm not looking to encase the alternator I am just looking to aid in blocking and protecting it from the elements.

I am thinking about a thin piece of sheet metal I found at tractor supply I can pretty much drill and bend it by hand but it's still sturdy enough. The bolt ontop of the alternator that acts as a belt tensioner Im thinking of bending and drilling a hole in it to fit into that bolt so I can tighten it down and it will shadow the alternator if it moves. I have a few random ideas floating in my head I'm going to plan out this weekend
