Alright guys need some opinions on which transfer case gears to go with. This will be in my 3.4 swapped 2nd gen 4runner I am planning to start sometime this summer. I'll be using the 5VZ A340 trans with the RF1A adapter. 4.88 gears with 285/75/R16's(33's). I've heard mixed opinions about both. Will the stock ratio will be low enough with the automatic trans? Or should I upgrade to the 4.7's while it's apart? FWIW I will be rebuilding the transfer case and doing a top shift conversion, twin stick. If I had a manual trans this would be a no brainer.

Edit: I will be using the A340F automatic transmission.

I say put 4.7s in it while its out and be done with it forever. Are you using the a340H or a340F?

Why not run dual cases ? With both the 2.2 and 4.7 you got 20 forward gears including 5 crawling gears .

If you're limited to the 2.2 or the 4.7 , that's a tough call depending on what kind of wheeling you are doing . My 4.7 tops out at about 12 or 13 mph in fifth gear ( I could be a little off , it just feels reeeaaallly slow) . So if your not in a big hurry , go with the 4.7 , you get tons of pull , and next to impossible to stall in first .

But if your running moderate trails , as in not too steep , or mild forest service roads , the 2.2 is plenty of pull , I can ring almost 30 mph out of fifth gear in my 2.2 case.

Good call on swapping in the 3.4 engine though , I went 22re back in the day , let's just say you learn to enjoy the scenery on the highway (read ; sloooow 'runner)

Don't want duals because of cost, also my 4runner will be almost stock so duals would be kinda overkill. Mainly interested in someone that has an A340F with a single 4.7 case and how they like it or not.

Dual ultimates are too low with an auto. In low low (136:1), the breaks wont stop you. Ideal crawl ratio for an auto is around 50. The 340f with 4.7s and his 4.56s (is that correct?) hell be at 60, which will crawl great.
