manual hub restore

Got some pretty rusty hubs on my truck. What should I do about the chrome housing that is pretty rusty? Think putting a wire wheel to it will help? If so what do I coat it with to protect from rust again.

You could sandblast them and coat them with a clear coat. There are several write ups on manual hub rebuilds that include cleaning and painting them.

Well since your housings are aluminum they aren't rusty. Thats just from the nuts. Try spraying them with Kroil or something then wipe it off.

Is there something I can protect them with afterwards?

Just make sure to clean them every once in a while.

Once the axle seals start leaking a nice film of oil should develop on the hub bodies and keep things from rusting too much.

not sure if any of you would know this, but I have automatic locking hubs, and kind of want to switch to manual. how hard would this be to do?
