1994 yota p/u newb w/questions

Well I bought a 94 toyota pickup4x4 this weekend and I love it so far. It has a brand new chs machined 3.0L under the hood followed by a newly rebuilt transmission. I am pretty well mechanically inclined but lack some knowledge on in depth engine stuff. The truck runs good but if you push the gas just above idle while she is sitting still she'll get a little studder in her purr. While doing this she'll produce a little smoke that has a strong hint of gasoline in it as if it was running rich. It has not used any oil (it is still on the break in oil)and there is no missing coolant. What would ya'll recommend looking at to get her smoothed out? Thanks, Marty

Clean truck! Is it throwing any codes? I'd try changing the fuel filter

Hmm not throwing any codes, I'll swap out the fuel filter and try that. It seems to do it when you hit about 50mph and it drops into overdrive and shifts down to low rpms as well.

Alright, so here is the update: Driving home from work yesterday it finally threw a code at me. Deciphered the code using my 1940 Little Orphan Annie decoder pin and lo and behold it's the dreaded code 25... So here is my way of thinking right now tell me if it's a good plan.. I'm going to change the fuel filter nonetheless but It seems as though it is a false lean reading since i'm getting a gas smell from the exhaust so i'm going to replace my O2 sensor as well. Does this thing have an upstream and downstream sensor? Thanks for the help!

If it's throwing a lean code it will cause the engine to dump more fuel causing the rich smell. Try cleaning the AFM before you buy an O2 sensor.

Whew, been a busy weekend working on the yota here is where I got so far...
1. Changed the fuel filter... Did toyota lose their mind when they put that thing there!? Nevertheless after 2.5 hours and drenched in gasoline it is changed
2. Checked the o2 sensor per the farm and it checked good (penny saved but spent elsewhere.
3. Started looking at vacuum lines. Holy smokes at the vacuum lines. They was all dry-rotted and cracking around the fittings. Ran down to the parts store and bought ten ft of vacuum hose. I started replacing vacuum hose and then started comparing their routing to the diagram on the hood. Apparently the mechanic that installed the motor didn't know how to read diagrams b/c there was about 5 or 6 in the wrong place. So I started over and fixed the ones that was wrong. While I was doing the vacuum lines I found that 2 of the nppls on the "egr vacuum modulator was broke off..... Replaced the modulator thingy and had to buy more vacuum hose because 10 ft was an underestimate! Just finished all the lines I can find... There's probably more.. Lol
4. Was fixing to clean the "air flow meter" started pulling it off the truck and the dang truck didn't even have an air filter in it.... Never in my life.. It's a good thing I rescued this truck from its previous owner!
So that's where I am right now.. Fixing to go clean the arm and get a dang air filter...
