Do roof racks similar to the ones available on 4Runner
even exist ? ( Yakima, etc. ) Anyone make a home grown version ?
Was thinking it would be a neat add on for my gear when I go
dirt biking etc. and the bed is already full. That and skis
or luggage.

I have a set of bars mounted to my canopy with these. Works well.

 

Your truck looks like it's in much better shape than the one I built a rack for, but if you're looking strictly for an over cab setup you might want to look at the writeup I did a few years ago.

It is bolted through the roof framing bars after pulling the headliner, the rack sits on a second set of nuts above the roof plane, holes are sealed with oversized washers, nuts and high quality silicone sealant. It will hold many hundreds of pounds on rough terrain with no issues. Just a matter of whether you want to drill holes in your roof - if you want a rack to take on and off, probably not the best idea.

From my experiences I'd say ladder racks are the best option for trucks, and if you want a cargo rack etc you can mount to them, but they are on the pricey side.

to keep the cops off my back. They HATE older built trucks here in
Quebec. All is good if you have a 35K+ built Rubicon though...

Quebec has become a Nazi province with the government's hand
in all aspects of your life. Got spotted by the SQ again this morning
on account of my MK2 diesel Jetta. They hate people trying to live outside
of the system debt free, but they love tax paying sheeple.

 

Seems to be the way the whole world's going unfortunately, but does appear you guys to the north are a couple steps ahead of us yet with respect to government "intervention". Funny to hear they're concerned about Yotas, because the biggest guzzler I've seen anywhere on the roads was in QC City, International MXT. I'm in Rutand area, 2.5 hrs from the border and almost that from Jay, but do get there for some riding every couple years anyway.

Probably best to avoid the somewhat ghetto approach I took of bolting through the roof if you want to look official and avoid police attention I suppose. Happy wrenching!

 

I am in the same boat, it seems like you can find cool ones for newer models but I cant find much for an 87 standard cab pickup. I am looking for something more for aesthetics than use, something that I can also mount lights too. Something like in the link I attached would be cool but I cant find anything for 87's besides general roof rails or ladder racks. I dont know how to weld either so fabricating one is out of the question.

Nissan Frontier racks are nice when equipped to a extended cab truck. A buddy of mine did it.
