What is this thing attached to the back of my transfer case?

My 2003 4-runner has a transfer case leak. There's a wired device attached at the rear of the transfer case. Fluid is leaking from the front of this device. I suspect that this device inserts into the case and that there's a seal that is leaking. I have some questions:
1. What is this device and what's its purpose?
2. Does it easily remove and slide out the rear of the case?
3. Is it common that this might have a leaking seal?
Thanks. Dave.

1) your looking at the transfer case shift actuator. It shifts your transfer case from 2wd to 4wd, and hi to low.
2) no, it doesn't remove easily. It requires removing and disassembling the transfer case.
3) I have seen quite a few leak. There are two or three o-rings on the shift rails that leak. As I said before, you have to remove and disassemble the transfer case to remove the actuator and replace the o-rings.
