Intermittent key buzzer 77 pickup (i used search)
1977 body on 1987 4x4 chassis 22r
Im sure this is a common issue. I searched and could only find people disabling the buzzer. My truck only buzzes once a week or so. And its when I turn the key to accessory. It will buzz for 10 seconds or less, and then it goes off. I removed my stereo today, and it was buzzing very consistently...but still in the incorrect manner. I am under the impression that its supposed to buzz if the key is in the ignition and OFF, regardless of the door open or closed.
I reconnected the stereo to how I had it, and the buzzer quit. So I disconnected the stereo once more, and tried to see if that would make the buzzer work again. I couldn't make it buzz.
Now I have the stereo hooked up, with no buzz. I have it directly hooked to the battery with a fusible link. And the accessory wire hooked to the spot for the old radio. I don't really care about the buzzer, but I don't want it to be a dangerous thing with a live wire somewhere. My question is what would make this so intermittent? And is that a fire hazard?
Side note: When I went to purchase the truck, the owner had his junk yard pit bull tied to the stick shift and had lost the keys. He pulled the ignition out of the column, and hot wired it so I could test drive it. Sounds rather shady, he was also drunk. He had to get the key made by a locksmith. Could he have crossed some wires when he reinstalled the lock after hot wiring?
I know this is difficult to diagnose over the internet, so any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave

All I can say is...my 78 sometimes buzzes. I think it's the fasten seatbelt buzzer. It's happened I think twice since buying the truck a year ago.
It's not something I'm worried about, electrical connection/fire danger wise...
But that doesn't mean you shouldn't be worried. Just letting you know I'm not
It's an old truck. Probably there are corroded connections somewhere along the wiring to the buzzer. So it only gets a signal now and then. Just a matter of the electricity not making it through a connection, probably, and not a dangerous connection that might spark or melt.
BUT...it's hard to say.
I'm not worried about mine.
Whether you should be worried about yours is up to you
Sorry I don't have specific "look here for a problem" advice. But I'd guess things could well be wired correctly, you just have corroded contacts.

The only reason I am so concerned is that my alternator caught fire last week and fried my whole harness. I just finished replacing the harness with a junkyard harness out of a 76 that was there. Everything works, except I could never figure out the buzzer. Thats why I think it has to be in the ignition.
