I'm new to the forum and by no means an expert on anything 4runner. Quite frankly bought my first runner May of last year based on their great reputation and the need to downsize from a family van. All I can say after a year of great driving on and off road is that "This is me" It really fits who I am. I just wish the newer models that I'm sure I'll be purchasing after this 01 had the older styling.

Anyways, after taking a chance on a used 01 with 120K (at a great price) I now have experienced my first breakdown. What looks like chocolate milkshake spewed from the coolant overflow yesterday 9-11. While is was driving fine up to the overheat, I had it towed to my mechanic just to be safe. From what I've read this could mean a radiator replacement at minimum with a tranny flush. The Tranny could also be toast? Some of you have suggested a heavier duty radiator? Is that the consensus?

It happened to mine at around 180k. I'm at 245k now with a new rad and it works like new.
As long as you flush the tranny properly you will be fine. Mine still works normally. We flushed it out 3 times to get everything out of it. (flushed, drove it for a day, flushed, drove it for 3 days, flushed, done).

No need for a HD rad. Just a stock one. And be prepared to replace it in 10 years.

another option, would be to bypass the atf cooler inside the lower tank of the radiator. then install a B&M atf cooler.

as a minimum, get the 70266 model. better if you get the one with a fan

Yes spend the money on an external cooler. Also make sure to change your coolant out every 2 years or so.

If you're on a budget use Zerex Asian (its pink)

 

definitely cooler mod time. you are better off this way anyway. keeps the oil temp down a lot better.
