Can I swap my 22R for 22RE by swapping heads?
On one of the other treads I asked about repairing my 85 2x that was totaled. Just prior to the accident (2 weeks) I had rebuilt my engine and temporary permited it to get some miles on the new rings and bearings before taking it through emissions. I have less then 200 miles I my nice rebuilt engine.
I have found a 86 4x4 22RE with 7' bed just like my old truck, except the 22r and 2x. Can I swap out my 22R engine and clutch with the the existing 22RE? The 22RE needs work and my engine is good. Body is real nice, needs boot on passenger side front drive axle. Oil is dripping from the clutch fork through the boot (and around the boot) by the slave cylinder. Uses about a quart of oil a month I'm told. The clutch slips I popped it in to 5th and floored it after popping the clutch and the engine went up almost 1,000 RPM before the clutch caught and lugged the engine.
I can do the work, I want to know if I an pull the 22RE out of the truck swap heads from the 22RE to the 85 22R and drop it into the newer truck now as a 22RE?
How different is this 86 from my 85? Both are longbeds with single cabs. The bed on this truck is the new style bed w/o the exterior ridge around the top edge of the bed. It also has wing windows which my truck didn't have.
One other thing I have noticed is it stops like it is twice as heavy as my truck. Bad vacuum assist? Will my 85 fit the 86?

Quite a bit more to doing that then swapping heads.
ECU from the 22REC
The ecu needs to see the inputs from the sensors etc.
fuel pump and proper plumbing and filter for the higher pressure
I am sure there are other things I am forgetting .

Motors are interchangeable. You will need to swap Oil Pans and Pickup tube and need a plate that blocks off the mechanical fuel pump to convert to 4x4 fuel injection.
I have heard of swapping winglass but have never dont that so dont know for sure.
I had more details but my computer lost connections so this post is alot shorter.

So how new of a 22RE can I use my 1985 22R engine in with the swapping of the heads and other parts pieces?
And are the V6s really the problem engine I hear they are?
Thanks for the answers so far and to come.

I havent done the swap on a 22r to re but have on a 5.0L ford 302. All we had to do was swap the top end(intake throtle body) then the ecu. Will have to put a new electric fuel pump, Id go brand new to be safe, and run new fuel line. Then correct sensors that are needed.
