Talking 4R noob; DCSB Tacoma owner; wanting an 87 Turbo!

Hey everyone!
I'm a regular on a few other forums, for my many past vehicles. I'm on TacomaWorld a lot. Currently I've got a built up 09 Tacoma DCSB. LOTS of stuff on there...

I'm parting out my truck now. Have some new powder coated (Satin black) Trail Edition wheels with 285/70/17 BFG ATs I'm selling by the way! Wheels AND tires are a month or two old. Maybe 1500 miles on them.

I'm looking for an 86 or 87 4Runner, love that convertible top! I had no idea Toyota made a TURBO engine!!! Was so happy when I came across one. Originally I was looking for an early 90s pick up, to lower, and build into a little auto cross truck, coilovers all around, LCEPerformance engine and turbo kit, etc. BUT, being in CA, all the rules sucking as they do, I was worried about legality. ALSO, I plan on getting a new Raptor for my offroad needs, but now, I'm thinking just the 4R will do nicely! No more street racer. Just a sweet rig that can do a whole lot, with plenty of power. SO, now my plan is to find that perfect 87/86, have LCE build me a block and turbo kit, mid or long travel all around, and get the interior to perfect!

Any tips? I DO have some concerns about the auto that comes with the turbo. Strong enough for added power? Should/can I swap to a manual? What are my options there? (The turbos only come in auto)

Thanks again! Glad to be here!
