Rear Axle Swap
Hello YotaTech,
I am currently envisioning my future toyota build and need some input. After scavenging this forum, I have come up with some ideas I have for my 1992 Toyota pickup, SR5 Xtra Cab with the 3VZE.
My question pertaining to this thread though, rear axle swap, may be a sin to mention on here... but given I don't want to open another account on another forum to ask this question... I am at y'alls mercy...
Has anyone ever dealt with.... or used.... the custom built Ford 9 inch axles offered by Ron Schreiner Enterprises?
I know!!! It is not exactly a Toyota axle, some people are die-hard Yota fans and will only use Yota parts, maybe I will stir up controversy,
but I need cheap, reliable and custom. WHEN I go with Total Chaos' long travel suspension kit I want to upgrade the rear axle to match the front width.
Schreiner quoted me a complete, full floating axle with 11.5 inch rotors, upgraded axle tubes, 4.11 gear ratio with the 6x5.5 lug pattern and 31 spline axles for under $1500. Website is www.9inchfloater.com
Does anyone have any input on this, specifically on Schreiner? Are there cheap toyota alternatives to a wider rear axle? The Ford 9 inch has a huge aftermarket and support, and its reliability is definitely known to be superb. Just a full floating kit for the current axle under my truck is around $1500, but this way I get the custom width.
Thanks in Advance!

No experience with Ron Shreiner, but I understand the desire for the extra axle width.
Lots of the decision comes into horsepower, tire size and intended use for what's the best housing.
If you're not going to be running 40" stickies, and clutch dropping on rocks, the toyota 8" is a fairly stout axle, as far as going custom width, you could call Brian at Diamond Axle (A MUCH NICER HOUSING), and have him whip up a housing to whatever width you want, with new chromoly axles to match.
Get it with the floater end cups, then all you need is some junkyard parts (spindles/hubs), and some new bearings and seals, and you are set.
Drop in you're third, and you're good to go. This way, you will always have available matching gears to you're front diff, and the toyota thirds have pretty good aftermarket support as well.
Price should be close to the same.

niall: Thanks for the input! I will be in contact with him to get some quotes. In all honesty I want to stay with the toyota axle so I can install the e-locker. an e-locker for a ford 9 inch does not exist, so now I really want a cheap Toyota axle mod lol.
donomite49: After your response, I started thinking to myself.... why didn't I just but a T100 to begin with, since what I am doing is essentially putting a T100 drivetrain under the truck?! lol, now you have me thinking about another truck.... but thanks for the info! That page is really handy.

i plan on using the extra track width of the T100 axle to locate long travel shocks between the frame and the hub so the shock towers are inside the wheel wells like a taco. look up taco rear shock tower on the total chaos catalog. or use these shocks
http://www.metalcloak.com/MetalCloak...hock-s/229.htm
you can't use an e-locker on the T100 axle but it will be cheap enough to use an aussie or other lunchbox locker instead of a custom axle. you can use a solid axle hub to do a floater yota axle. article on 4x4 wire or another site should be able to google it.

Why can't you run an elocker on the t100 housing?
As far as I can figure, you just need to clearance the housing a bit.

An auto locker in a long travel application is a terrible idea imo. You'd be much better off with an ARB or spool if that's not in the budget.
T100 axle with ruff stuff full float flanges is what i would do with a spool. Cheap strong and all yota parts for brakes, rotors, bearings etc... Lighter than a 9 inch and won't require a custom driveline if you don't get too crazy with the suspension.

A tacoma e-locker should go into a t100
Housing, arb lists the same part numbers for their lockers, so i assume the third is the same. Beyond clearancing the housing to fit the elocker.

if you read the T100 section on http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/ you will find out why they are not interchangeable.
@toy why don't you like the idea of a locker with long travel? just curious.

Tacomas and t100s do use the same diffs according to that link,, but not the e-locker version. But multiple
Locked and lsd options. Still the best option to match to an TC kit. You will need a much more hard core kit with a fully caged truck to exceed the capabilities of a t100
Housing, but get whatever you can get a deal on.

So you could probably run the V6 elocker in the t100 housing. A little bit of fab, weld/fill in the existing mountingholes, and redrill/tap for the V6 mounting pattern.
Or buy the diamond, housing.

Putting the t100 third in the v6 housing would be different, you'd have to cut the rear of the housing out to fit the bearing girdle, and then fab a new cover for the back of the housing.
I'm looking at a t100 and v6 third right now, but meh, what do I know. The depth from the mounting surface, to center of where the axles would go is identical. Therefore, it would work.

not trying to argue, the point i am trying to make is it looks like it is just way too much trouble than it's worth.
it would be much cheaper to put a locker in T100 housing, you could even put an ARB setup for less money AND work even if you could do this or knew someone who could...

Gentleman, I do appreciate the insight to the e-lockers and compatible axles. I have done a fair share of research on the options myself, and now that diamond axles are in the picture, I am a little more enthusiastic about what may become of this truck.
This thread seems to have gone a little off topic, but that's what I get for not checking up on it...
I am still curious if anyone has heard of Ron Schreiner and his reputation. Only reason I am still leaning towards a Ford 9 inch is if I decide to do a 6x6 conversion, which has been a dream of mine for awhile, then the 9 inch can be built with a straight through pinion where I can attach a driveline to the backside of the housing.
But....still no e-locker...
I would be running an over 400hp supercharged Buick 3800 V6 (eventually twin charged), so a full floating axle would suit it well.

In my opinion, with long travel the name of the game is to keep your unsprung weight to a minimum because the more weight, the more shock you need to control it. So keep that in mind when choosing an axle.
