I don't know the answer to your question but maybe take a look at the Wheelskins steering wheel covers. They are leather and come in lots of colors, mine fit perfect, and it looks factory (not cheap like most covers). I got it for around $40 on ebay. Just make sure you find the correct size for your 4runner and you can choose your color(s) to match what you have. Much cheaper than a new wheel and MUCH easier to install too.

okay thanks guys. yeah i was considering the wheelskins but I know I am going to make a mess of sewing that thing to the wheel. i just bought a '02 steering wheel so I'll find out soon enough and let you guys know.

there was a thread in here before about replacing the leather cover. iirc, it was started by bamachem and they dealt with a guy from Florida, i think.. they were very happy with the quality
about the steering wheel, the newerr ones (01-02) should fit the older ones (96-97)
