How does this look to you guys?


I want a full rack to carry more gear, serve as an awning mount, and be a stable base for a canoe. I like to camp in style.

Currently my plan is to use one pair of Yak Q-towers for the front support and three pairs of Con-ferr mounts in the factory rails. Will this work?? The roofline looks pretty straight and I think it'll work and won't require custom fabbing three different brackets . . .

The rack will cover about 3/4 of the moonroof, which is fine with me, but I want to be sure the roof is stable enough over the moonroof. Is this a real issue? Anything else I should know about the 4runner roofs? Are there pre-drilled holes to bring wires inside for the rack lights?

 

In theory, it should work. Make sure the yak tower and conferr mounts are the same height, and I trust the confer mounts will take yak crossbars? Strenght should not be an issue if the most your carrying is some gear and a canoe (assuming the canoe is aluminum and reasonably light). I've had two 32" spare tires with rims on my rack before, no probs.

I'm not sure if the predrilled holes are inteded for wires, but they do work for that purpose... just becareful of leaks. A lot of people (including myself) have found other ways to run wires to roof mounted lights.

 

Usually roofs with sunroofs are reinforced internally and are actually stronger than if there weren't a big hole in the middle.

Don't know about the other stuff.

I'm sure you have seen pics by now of my Yakima Load Warrior roof rack.

It lists the overall size of it, plus you can add the 18" extension I have.

They also make a bigger rack called the Mega Warrior which might fill your bill:

It's wider and longer, and an extension is available for it.

 

thanks guys. i suspect I will have to fab some brackets to get the rail mounts to work, but that's not a big deal. I just hope I don't have to make different height brackets for the middle and rear of the rack. BTW, i already have the rack. i just need to transfer it from my old truck. i will also have to narrow it a bit to fit, but the length is right and it is very sturdy.

jacksonpt - where are the existing holes you used to wire the rack located?
