85 toyota please help

I have recently purchesed my 85 toyota pickup 22rec, and cant not figure out what the problem is. When it gets to 2800 to 3000 rpm the check engine light comes on and it loses a lot power, 80 percent of the time when u start it it wants to die like it floods out and is hard to start back. I have put new plugs, new destributer, rotery button, oil change, and a used knock senser. please give some ideas

I'm not too familiar with 22re, especially an 85. Read this page, it tells you everything you need to know. http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...html#Early22RE

Possibly something EGR related? Had a similar issue on a family members car that turned out to be an EGR issue. The only difference was there was no power loss, just the check engine light at a certain RPM range.

Your diag port is on the drivers fender, the smaller round one in the bottom pic. Use a paper clip, turn key to the on position and count the number of blinks. Use 4crawler link to determine code.

How to get Check Engine Codes. I just put this up for others. Applies to 87 and up. 86 and older is the bottom picture.

The Diagnostic port for the 85-86 is on the Drivers side inner fender and is nothing the same as the 87 and up. Here is T1 and E1 jumped. The codes and engine flashes are the same as the rest of the trucks on the dash.
