1/2 door inserts no more rain

I am sick of getting wet with my 1/2 doors. So I am going a different approach than most. I kept the metal I cut out from my 1/2 and thought it would make a cool and sturdy insert. I trimmed 1/4" off aprox all the way around and then welded 1/4" round stock to the edge.
The starting point

The back side with locating pins, Note: cup holder still accessible.

The front view not finished

I then welded 2 pieces of 1/4" rod to the bottom like a jeep 1/2 door has. I marked the spots on my door and drilled a hole for a grommet. I am going to use the same concept for the top sides but I am making a spring loaded latch to hold the top in . I will finish these with some filler and paint and fill in the door handle opening. Then take them to a marine shop for some black vinyl and zippable windows to finish the top off ,the top part will just snap on and snap around the window frame for easy install.I will seal the gap on the 1/2 doors with a black closed cell foam attached to the 1/2 door insert . What do you think so far?

I wanted something different that worked . I won't use the inserts much ,but it would be nice to use on a rainy day or in the snow. I think they look pretty good to . I countersunk them a bit . We Will see, hopefully they turn out good.

That's a real good idea. I knew there was a reason that I kept that scrap around like you did

This is the backside . It shows the latches and I used some spray on bedliner to finish it off.

The finished doors with top inserts that I had made at a upholstery shop. They turned out really nice.

The windows Velcro so they are like jeep windows without the zippers.
